The Way of the Cross - Publisher's Foreword

Since its first appearance in 1896, this little volume has gone through numerous editions and at least two titles. For many years it was known as The Way of the Cross, but more recently many have come to know it under the title Beyond Humiliation. In preparing the present edition for the press, we have used the First Edition of 1896 as a basis, because we felt that most of those interested in obtaining and reading this volume will want to possess all twenty-three chapters of the original version in their unabridged form. To the best of our knowledge, every edition since the first has omitted at least two chapters. Beyond Humiliation omits not only the customary two chapters, but also various paragraphs here and there throughout the book.

By stating the above, we are not criticizing any former publisher for not presenting an unabridged work, but rather making it clear that this edition is an exact copy of the original.

I wish to express my profound gratitude to Jack Morrison of Rare Christian Books for his kindness in loaning me his copy of this book for us to reprint from, and for his encouragement along the way.

The only changes that have been made are that American spelling has been used throughout, all Roman numerals for Scripture references have been changed to ordinary numbers, and in a very few instances punctuation has been updated.

In his Preface to the Second Edition of this book, Gregory Mantle wrote: “Many testimonies have reached me from far and near of definite blessing received through pondering these pages. To God alone be all the glory.” May the Lord add to that number many in this generation who can testify to receiving the same blessing from perusing these pages.
