Description
Song at Twilight contains 50 meditations from the able and fluent pen of Vance Havner, America’s most quoted preacher. In the preface he notes that his previous batch of meditations had been titled It Is Toward Evening, adding, “This new collection indicates that by now I am approaching twilight.” In these pages you will find the mature perceptions of someone who has walked with God for many decades through this decaying and decadent world with a firm step and steady gaze toward the city whose builder and maker is God. The gates of that city are within sight as the traveler shares with us the distilled wisdom of many years before taking flight to the heavenly realms.
Of special interest in this volume is the writer’s comments on a trip he evidently made to the Holy Land, passing through Rome, Greece, and Turkey, with rich insights on the various places of antiquity connected with the apostle Paul and our Lord himself. He has comments about remains such as the Colosseum and the Mamertine prison as well as towns and cities such as Athens, Corinth, Bethlehem, Bethel, and Jerusalem. You will be richly rewarded for the time spent perusing these pages.
Vance Havner (1901-1986) was a unique servant of God whose spoken ministry spanned over seventy years and whose written ministry extended to almost forty books. Michael Catt, Pastor of Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, Georgia, says of him: “There was no one like Vance Havner. His preaching style was unique, powerful, and pointed. He was a master at turning a phrase, using humor to set up a point, and then driving the point home like a sharp, two-edged sword. Every Christian should read Vance Havner… If you love A. W. Tozer, you’ll love Vance Havner. He was one of God’s gifts to the church in the 20th century. His ministry and his preaching needs to be heard in the 21st century.”
