Kingsley Press is pleased to announce the immediate availability of it’s latest classic reprint from the pen of Vance Havner: On This Rock I Stand. These thirteen chapters are laden with the kind of heart-searching truth and inspirational wit and wisdom Havner was known for. The first chapter is the transcript of Havner being interviewed by well-known author Jerry Jenkins. The second chapter is a transcript of the sermon Havner preacher the day his wife passed away. In the third chapter, called “On This Rock I Stand,” he first laments the drift of the church in America, then proceeds to list a number of unchanging, bedrock truths that should define us as evangelical believers.
One of my favorite passages in the book is from a chapter entitled “Wake Up and Get Up.” It’s vintage Havner:
“Have I ever bowed to the absolute sovereignty of the Holy Spirit? Do I lie to him, grieve him, quench him? Do I regard my body as his temple? Have I ever been filled with the Holy Spirit? Or would I rather miss a blessing than to give up a prejudice? The trouble with us today is that we say we are depending on the Holy Spirit; but we are actually so wired up with our own devices that if the fire does not fall from heaven, we can turn on a switch and produce false fire of our own. If there is no sound of a mighty rushing wind, our furnace is all set to blow hot air instead. God save us from a synthetic Pentecost!”
Don’t hesitate to add this great book to your Vance Havner collection today: On This Rock I Stand.
